Biotin

 

DESCRIPTION/FUNCTION

  • Biotin is classified as a member of the B-vitamins. It is an essential component of some enzymes (carboxylases), and is involved in synthesis and breakdown of fatty acids and amino acids through aiding the addition and removal of carbon dioxide to or from active compounds, and the removal of NH2 from amino acids.

DRI (RDA or AI for Adults)

  • Adults: 30 mcg.
  • Lactation: 35 mcg.

MAJOR SOURCES

  • Peanuts, filberts, almonds, peanut butter, walnuts, soy protein isolate, egg, cashews, lowfat yogurt, mackerel, haddock, sweet potato, Swiss chard, salmon, artichoke, nonfat milk, tomato sauce, whole milk, macadamia nuts.
  • Also synthesized by intestinal bacteria.

MAINTENANCE/THERAPEUTIC RANGE

  • 30 mcg to 1,000 mcg.

POSSIBLE THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS

  • Diabetes

COMMENTS

  • Biotin may help with brittle nails by increasing thickness. Biotin can be produced by the beneficial bacteria in the large intestine.
